Congress 85th Plenary Session: The 85th National Convention of Congress is going on in Chhattisgarh’s capital Raipur. In this, it was decided not to hold the election of the Congress Working Committee (CWC). Now party president Mallikarjun Kharge will have to do the work of choosing this CWC. The party has given a free hand to Kharge, but has also thrown a big challenge on his shoulders.
Party general secretary Jairam Ramesh said that it was unanimously decided in the steering committee that there will be no elections to the CWC, rather the Congress president will nominate the members of the CWC. Jairam Ramesh said that in view of the current political situation and the challenges faced by the Congress being the main opposition party of the country, it has been decided not to hold the CWC elections. Means now Mallikarjun Kharge has been authorized to nominate members in both elected and nominated categories of CWC.
Choosing a CWC member is a big challenge
By changing its constitution, the party has now increased the number of permanent members of the CWC to 35. Till now the number of members was 23. In this, the names of 4 members are considered to be absolutely fixed, apart from Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, the names of Manmohan Singh are included. Party President Mallikarjun Kharge will decide the names of the remaining 31 members. Now the biggest challenge before them will be that who should be included in this committee and who should be left out.
Who to include, who not
Senior party leaders like P Chidambaram, Digvijaya Singh, Jairam Ramesh, Shakti Singh Gohil, Ambika Soni, Mukul Wasnik, Selja Kumari, Tariq Anwar, Bhakta Charan Das, JP Agarwal, Rajeev Shukla, HK Patil are strong contenders for the CWC . If Kharge’s challenge is that if only he is included in the CWC, then how will new people be given a chance? On the other hand, if more importance is given to young brigades like Sachin Pilot, and Imran Pratapgarhi, then there will be lack of experience. Apart from this, leaders like Shashi Tharoor and Manish Tiwari will also be under pressure.
Reason for giving free hand to Kharge
After Kharge became the president, it is discussed that he works under pressure or behest of 10 Janpath or Gandhi family. In such a situation, by giving a free hand to Kharge, the party wants to indicate that whatever decision was taken by the steering committee, it was taken independently. There was no pressure on him from Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi or the family. The Gandhi family tried to indicate that Kharge, as president, should choose his own team, the CWC.
