Conrad Sangama Meets Governor: In Meghalaya’s election results on Thursday (02 February), Konrad K. Sangma’s National People’s Party emerged as the single largest party. After this, on Friday (03 February), Sangma met Governor Fagu Chauhan and staked claim to form the government. The NPP won 26 of the state’s 59 seats in the elections. Sangma said that he has the support of BJP, HSPDP and two independent MLAs.
He has handed over the letter of support of total 32 MLAs to the Governor to form the government. Sangma said, “I have submitted letters of support from several parties to the governor. In total, we have the support of 32 MLAs. Besides 26 MLAs from the NPP, there are two MLAs each from BJP and HSPDP and two independents.” He said that the swearing-in ceremony will be held on March 7 at 11 am and the Prime Minister Narendra Modi Will also be present on this occasion.
‘Talks are also being held with some other MLAs’
Apart from this, he said, “All these MLAs have signed the letter. We are talking to some more parties and their MLAs. Therefore, the number is likely to increase in the coming days.” The NPP supremo claimed that various parties have approached him to extend support to the government led by his party. However, he has not yet decided the name of the new alliance.
Sangma on hijacking MLAs
At the same time, the opposition accused the NPP of hijacking the MLAs. In response, Sangma said, “No one has kidnapped anyone. We have got their full support.” Earlier in the day, a high voltage drama was witnessed. Opposition parties including TMC, Congress, UDP, PDF and VPP discussed how a non-NPP and non-BJP government can be formed.

Giving details about the meeting of the opposition to form a non-NPP and non-BJP government, former chief minister Mukul Sangma said, “Except BJP and NPP, all parties were present. All parties are sensitive to the responsibilities assigned to us. We are aware of the responsibilities that come with the mandate.” At the same time, UDP president Metbah Ling Doh said, “I have been approached by all political parties who do not want to be part of the new government under the NPP. He felt that all the new members should sit and see whether we are with the majority or not. So I invited them. All 31 of them were present.”
Which party won how many seats
Konrad Sangma’s party NPP emerged as the single largest party in Meghalaya by winning 27 seats. On the other hand, the UDP, which was an ally of the NPP in the Sangma government, won 11 seats while remaining second. Congress and Mamta Banerjee’s TMC won 5-5 seats. Apart from this, BJP, HSPDP and PDF won 2-2 seats. 2 MLAs have won as independents.
