Meghalaya Election: Voting for the assembly elections is to be held in Meghalaya on Monday (February 27). Before that, narcotics worth Rs 33.24 crore and Rs 8.63 crore have been seized. Chief Electoral Officer FR Kharkongor said that law enforcement agencies have also seized precious metals worth Rs 91 lakh, liquor worth Rs 2.54 crore and other items worth Rs 27.37 crore to be distributed among voters.
“The total value of seizures made since the model code of conduct came into force on January 18 is Rs 72.70 crore,” he said, according to news agency PTI. Polling will be held on Monday for 59 seats in the state’s 60-member assembly and The counting of votes will take place on March 2. Even before this, drugs, liquor and cash worth Rs 147 crore were seized from three northeastern states.

So there, drug peddlers were also arrested just three days ago. This arrest was made from East Khasi Hills of Meghalaya. On the basis of secret information, the police had run an operation. 112 grams of heroin, 50 thousand rupees in cash, 2 bikes, 3 mobile phones and 8 ATM cards were seized from these drug peddlers.
Earlier, according to officials, the seized items included Rs 14 crore in cash, foreign liquor worth over Rs 9 crore and drugs worth Rs 85.76 crore. The highest seizure was made in Meghalaya at over Rs 63 crore, followed by Tripura at Rs 44.67 crore and Nagaland at Rs 39.19 crore. The poll panel said there was a more than 20-fold increase in seizures in the three states as compared to the assembly elections in 2018.
The commission said that a special inter-agency team was formed to control illegal drugs. The team had destroyed cannabis worth more than Rs 14 crore being cultivated in Tripura.
