Snowfall: All flights from Srinagar airport canceled due to heavy snowfall in Kashmir, highway also closed


Flights Canceled At Srinagar Airport: All flights to and from Srinagar airport have been canceled due to heavy snowfall in the Kashmir Valley on Monday (January 30). The national highway was also closed due to bad weather. The Meteorological Department has issued a warning of similar weather conditions for the next 12 hours.

Incessant snowfall reduced visibility to less than 500 metres, forcing cancellation of all 68 scheduled flights at the Srinagar airport. Train services were also suspended on the Baramulla-Banihal rail line due to bad weather. According to information, five inches of snow has accumulated in Srinagar city till Monday morning, while Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg and other high altitude areas have received one to three feet of snow.

The minimum temperature in Srinagar was minus 0.2, Pahalgam minus 1.4 and Gulmarg minus 4.6 degrees Celsius. Whereas in Ladakh region, the minimum temperature was minus 6.8 in Kargil and minus 0.6 degree Celsius in Leh. The minimum temperature was 10.4 in Jammu, 9 in Katra, 1.2 in Batote, 0.2 in Banihal and minus 0.6 degrees Celsius in Bhaderwah. According to the Meteorological Department (IMD), there is a possibility of a drop of 2-3 ┬░ C in the minimum temperature in many parts of northwest India till February 1 and an increase of 2-4 ┬░ C thereafter.

Avalanche alert issued

High danger level avalanches are expected in Doda, Kishtwar and Poonch districts at 2,500 meters above sea level in the next 24 hours. The JKDMA has predicted moderate danger level avalanches above 1,500 to 2,500 meters in Bandipora, Baramulla, Ganderbal, Kupwara, Kulgam and Ramban districts in the next 24 hours. People living in these areas have been asked to take precautions and avoid going to avalanche prone areas.

Avalanche alert in Jammu and Kashmir

Apart from this, the Meteorological Department of Jammu and Kashmir has expressed the possibility of Avalanche. The JKDMA said that there is a possibility of avalanches with a high danger level of 2500 meters above sea level in Doda, Kishtwar and Poonch districts in the next 24 hours. There is a possibility of medium danger level avalanche above 1500 to 2500 meters in Bandipore, Ganderbal, Kupwara, Kulgam and Ramban districts in next 24 hours.
