Meghalaya Assembly Election Candidates: Meghalaya will vote for a new government in a single phase on Monday (February 27). There are 60 constituencies for the assembly of this northeastern state. The counting of votes will take place on March 2. The current chief minister and head of the NPP, Conrad Sangma, is trying to make a comeback in the state. He is contesting from South Tura seat in West Garo Hills. He is up against Zenith Sangma of AITC and John Leslie Sangma of UDP. Know about other major candidates.
Mukul Sangma
Mukul Sangma, the current Leader of the Opposition in Meghalaya, will contest from two seats for the Trinamool Congress. Mukul is contesting from Bajengdoba in North Garo Hills and Raksamgre constituencies in West Garo Hills. The former chief minister was a long-time Congress leader before switching to the Trinamool Congress in 2021. Mukul has accused the ruling coalition of committing atrocities and giving land to Assam.
Vincent Pala
Meghalaya Congress President Vincent Pala is currently also the Lok Sabha MP from Shillong. Pala is contesting from Sutnga Saipung seat in East Jaintia Hills. “We are ready to fight the electoral battle and we are confident of winning maximum seats,” Pala told news agency PTI.
Metbah Lyngdoh
UDP president and Meghalaya speaker Metbah Lyngdoh also figure in the list of prominent candidates. In alliance with BJP, Lyngdoh is hoping to secure victory. Metbah Lyngdoh is contesting from Mairang seat. He is up against Batskhem Ryntathiang of Congress.
James Sangma
The chief minister’s brother and cabinet minister James Sangma is the NPP candidate. He is contesting from Dadengre seat. He is up against Augustine Marak of Congress and Rupert Sangma of TMC.
Prestone Tynsong
Preston Tynsong is the current Deputy Chief Minister of Meghalaya. He is in the fray from Pinersla seat. A four-cornered contest is being considered on this seat. Tynsong will take on candidates from AITC, INC and UDP.
Ernest Mawrie
Ernest Mowry is the Meghalaya BJP President. Recently, he has been in headlines due to his statement regarding Beef. This time he is contesting from West Shillong constituency. He hails from Lumbatangan Law-U-Sib village in East Khasi Hills district.
