Atta Price Cut: Flour prices are expected to fall. According to the Association of Flour Mills, the government’s decision to sell 30 lakh tonnes of wheat in the open market will result in a fall in the prices of wheat and wheat flour by Rs 5 to 6 per kg.
To curb the rising prices of wheat and wheat flour, the central government on Wednesday announced the sale of 30 lakh tonnes of wheat from its buffer stock in the open market. Wheat will be sold through various channels in the next two months through the Food Corporation of India (FCI). While wheat will be sold through e-auction to wholesalers like flour mill owners, FCI wheat will be sold to public sector units/cooperatives/federations for grinding wheat to make flour and make it available to the public at a maximum retail price (MRP) of Rs 29.50. , will sell to Kendriya Bhandar/NCCF/NAFED at the rate of Rs.23.50 per kg.
Pramod Kumar, president of the Roller Flour Millers Federation of India (RFMFI), said, “We welcome the government’s move. This decision should have been taken a month ago. This is the right step. Wholesale and retail prices will soon come down to Rs 5-6 per kg.
According to government data, the average price of wheat in major cities stood at Rs 33.43 per kg on Wednesday, compared to Rs 28.24 per kg at this time last year. The average price of wheat flour was recorded at Rs 37.95 per kg, as against Rs 31.41 per kg at the same time last year.
Under the OMSS policy, the government allows the Food Corporation of India, a government undertaking, to sell food grains, especially wheat and rice, to bulk consumers and private traders from time to time at pre-determined prices in the open market. Its purpose is to increase its supply during the off-season of special cereals and to rein in the general open market prices. The flour mills had demanded the government from the FCI to bring grains from the wheat stock to the market.
