Patiala House Court on Al-Qaeda Terror Case: Delhi’s Patiala House Court on Friday (February 10) convicted four accused associated with the dreaded terrorist organization Al Qaeda while hearing about their arrest. The court has convicted all four under UAPA (Unlawful Activities Prevention Act). The arrests of the accused took place between 2015 and 2020 in a terrorist case of Al Qaeda. Two accused were acquitted by the court.
The four accused convicted by the court include the names of Mohammad Asif, Maulana Mohammad Abdul Rehman Qasmi, Zafar Masood and Abdul Sami. At the same time, the accused Syed Mohammad Zeeshan Ali and Dr. Sabeel Ahmed were acquitted by the court.
All four used to carry out terrorist activities for AQIS
Mohammad Asif, Maulana Mohammad Abdul Rehman Qasmi, Zafar Masood and Abdul Sami were associated with ‘Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent’ (AQIS). The court noted that Asif, Masood, Rehman and Sami have been convicted under sections 18 (conspiracy to commit terrorist acts) and 18-B (recruiting persons for terrorist acts) of the UAPA.
This punishment can be given on 14 February
Special Judge Sanjay Khanagwal said the prosecution has been able to prove charges under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) against the four accused. The court is likely to hear arguments on the quantum of sentence for the convicts on February 14 and they can be sentenced to maximum life imprisonment.
Two released on a bond of Rs 10-10 thousand
The two suspected AQIS members who were acquitted accepted their plea that the prosecution had failed to prove a case against them. The judge directed to release them on a bond of Rs 10,000 each.
The court had framed charges against the accused in 2017 while Syed Anjar Shah was acquitted in the case. The Special Cell of Delhi Police had claimed that Rehman used to run a madrassa in Uttar Pradesh where many students were enrolled and he allegedly tried to radicalise them for terrorist activities.
