Loksabha Election 2024: About one year is left for the Lok Sabha elections in 2024. Under the leadership of PM Modi, BJP is making full efforts to form the third government in a row. The BJP-led NDA is in power since the last two elections. Both the times BJP had won majority even on its own. This is the same BJP which could not even touch the figure of 200 in the survey till 2009-14. After 2009, let’s understand how the BJP continued to rise.
Before understanding the rise of BJP, let us have a look at the figures of 2009 Lok Sabha elections. Then the Congress became the single largest party by winning 206 seats and under its leadership the UPA formed the government for the second time in a row. The Congress got 11.9 crore votes in the election, while the number of votes polled by the BJP was 7.8 crore.
BJP turned the dice in 5 years
2014 Loksabha election by BJP Narendra Modi fought under the leadership of This time BJP’s vote increased to 17.1 crore. With 282 seats, the BJP alone became the majority party. This happened after several elections. At the same time, the Congress was reduced to 44 seats.
The special thing is that as much as the vote of BJP increased, that of Congress did not decrease that much. Congress got 10.6 crore votes in 2014. That is, in five years, BJP’s vote increased by more than 10 percent to 9 percent, while Congress’s vote percentage decreased by about 1 percent.
BJP’s vote increased again in 2019
In the Lok Sabha elections 2019, BJP once again jumped up and its voters increased to 22.9 crores. Compared to 2009, in 2019 BJP got 14.1 crore more votes. If you look at the figures of Congress, once again its vote has reached 11.9 crores.
If we look at the number of seats, BJP got 303 votes, while Congress got stuck on 52 after going a little ahead of 44. It is worth noting that in 2019, Congress got the same number of votes as in 2009, but its seats were less than 150.
How did BJP play
Behind this boom of BJP is the increase in its vote share. BJP got 18.8 percent of the total votes in 2009. The Congress got 28.55 per cent votes. In 2014, the BJP’s vote share jumped by 13 per cent to 31.34 per cent, while that of the Congress came down to 19.52 per cent. In 2019, the BJP took its vote share to 37.76 per cent while the Congress could not go beyond 19.70 per cent.
Transfer of votes of other parties to BJP
The vote share of Congress remained equal in 2009 and 2019, so it is quite understandable that the vote of other parties got transferred to BJP. As a result of this, the vote share of BJP kept on increasing while the vote share of the Congress, despite being with it, the party became a laggard. If Congress has to win the field this time too, then attention will have to be paid to increase the vote share.
