India Maldives Relationship: India is very special for Maldives, an island country located in the Indian Ocean. That’s why the foreign policy there is based on ‘India First’. According to news agency ANI, Abdullah Shahid went ahead and praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi and quoted his statement saying that Prime Minister Narendra Modi clearly stated that G-20 is not only those 20 countries, who are sitting around the table. Abdulla Shahid told ANI, “For Maldives, India is special.”

Abdullah said, “Our foreign policy is based on India because I have already told you – we have no enemies, but we all have friends.” Maldivian Foreign Minister said that India has the largest population , and it is the fastest growing economy and this time it is the chairman of G20.

Appreciating the stature India has achieved on the global stage, he said, “India’s leadership at the international level has been excellent and it is for all to see how India has established itself.”

Mentioning how India has benefited from its ‘neighbourhood-first’ policy, Abdullah said, “Indian leadership is being talked about internationally and respected across the globe.” We are very happy that we have a neighbor who has a ‘neighbour-first’ policy and is ready to reach out, India is a time-tested friend of ours. In our (Maldives) difficult times, India was the first to respond.”
He said, “The generosity with which India reached out to us during the crisis of 1988, Tsunami of 2004 and water crisis of 2015 and more recently during the COVID-19 pandemic is amazing. We are very grateful that India has reached out to us in this way.” reached.”
