Mr. Neil Mallik serves as the first NASA Technical Fellow for Space Systems Communications within the NASA Engineering and Safety Center (NESC).
In this role, he provides Agency-wide leadership for the space communications discipline, leading independent engineering assessments and advising the Office of the Chief Engineer, Mission Directorates, and NASA programs on complex technical issues affecting mission success. He leads the Space Communications Technical Discipline Team, bringing together experts from across NASA, industry, academia, national laboratories, and the Department of Defense to advance the discipline, reduce technical risk, and strengthen engineering stewardship across the Agency.
Prior to joining the NESC, Mr. Mallik served for six years in NASA’s Office of the Chief Engineer, where he was the Chief Engineer for the Space Operations Mission Directorate and the Space Communications and Navigation (SCaN) Program. As Engineering Technical Authority, he provided independent engineering oversight for NASA’s human spaceflight operations portfolio, including the International Space Station, Commercial Crew Program, Commercial Low Earth Orbit Development Program, and Launch Services Program. He also served as Technical Authority for NASA’s space communications networks, mission operations, and future communications capabilities, leading independent engineering assessments, resolving complex technical issues, strengthening engineering governance, and supporting the safe certification and operation of human spaceflight systems.
Throughout his career, Mr. Mallik has helped shape NASA’s approach to human spaceflight communications by advancing the integration of government and commercial communications architectures while strengthening engineering governance, technical authority, and discipline stewardship across the Agency.
Before joining Headquarters, Mr. Mallik served as Director of the Human Space Flight Network, where he led the engineering, operations, and modernization of NASA’s communications and navigation infrastructure supporting every U.S. human spaceflight mission from 2015 through 2020. During this period, he directed communications engineering and mission operations supporting 63 crewed missions and flight tests while working closely with commercial partners, including SpaceX, Boeing, and Sierra Space, to develop interoperable space communications systems supporting NASA’s expanding commercial human spaceflight capabilities.
Prior to joining NASA, Mr. Mallik spent ten years in the commercial aerospace industry with Orbital Sciences Corporation and Orbital ATK. As Comms operator, he led flight operations for four Cygnus cargo missions to the International Space Station. As Engineering Manager, he directed the design, development, integration, and test of unique communications systems for eight Cygnus spacecraft. Earlier in his career, he served as Systems Lead for 48 commercial low Earth orbit communications satellites and led the design, development, and test of communications antennas for 12 geostationary spacecraft supporting Intelsat, SES Americom, MEASAT, and Optus. He also led engineering analyses and failure investigations supporting several NASA science flagship missions.
Mr. Mallik has contributed to the advancement of the space communications discipline through invited technical presentations, executive forums, and university lectures on technical leadership, commercial human spaceflight, communications architectures, software-defined radio technologies, and autonomous spacecraft operations. He has delivered keynote presentations, including at the University of Virginia and the University of Pennsylvania, on NASA’s commercialization strategy and the partnerships enabling the next generation of commercial spaceflight.
Mr. Mallik has received more than fourteen NASA awards recognizing leadership and technical excellence, including the NASA Outstanding Leadership Medal and four NASA Silver Achievement Medals for contributions to human spaceflight and exploration missions. He is also the recipient of the Rotary National Award for Space Achievement and the National Space Society’s Space Pioneer Award for contributions to commercial space development.
Mr. Mallik holds a Master of Business Administration from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University, and a Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Queen Mary, University of London.
