England and Wales Marriage Law: A new law raising the legal age to marry in England and Wales to 18 came into force on Monday (February 27) with the aim of protecting vulnerable young people from being forced into marriage against their will.
Until now in England and Wales people aged 16 or 17 could marry with parental consent, as there was no law against marriage for young children. Before their local councils people were not registered.

The new law has been welcomed by a charity campaigning against forced marriage. This is an issue affecting certain sections of the South Asian and African communities in the UK. UK Deputy Prime Minister and Secretary of State for Justice Dominic Raab said the legislation would better protect vulnerable young people by cracking down on forced marriages in our society.
He further said that those who work to manipulate children into getting married at an early age will now have to face the full force of the law. Those found guilty of arranging child marriages face up to seven years in prison.

This new law will also be applied to traditional and illegal marriage families in England, which fall within minority communities. The UK government said that 18 years of age is broadly classified as the age at which one becomes an adult and acquires full citizenship rights.
Earlier forced marriage was only an offense if any person used any form of coercion, for example by threatening to marry, but now it is an offense to force a child under 18 years of age into marriage under any circumstances.
