Shelly Oberoi Delhi Mayor: The election of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi was held in the month of December last year and since then the Mayor was yet to be elected. Wednesday (February 22) was the day when Shelly Oberoi was elected as the Mayor of Delhi.
Aam Aadmi Party’s style defeated BJP’s Rekha Gupta by 34 votes and once again there was an atmosphere of celebration in AAP. CM Arvind Kejriwal reacted to this and said that the goons were defeated. After this, Aale Mohammad Iqbal of AAP was elected as the deputy mayor.
After this, a ruckus started regarding the Standing Committee, which continued till 12 o’clock in the night. It can be seen in the video that AAP and BJP councilors are throwing papers at each other. Shelly Oberoi tweeted and alleged that BJP councilors tried to attack her.

- In the election, the numerical strength was in favor of AAP, which got 150 votes against BJP’s 113 votes out of total 274 votes. Two votes were of independent councillors. Oberoi got all the votes according to his party, while the BJP got three votes more than its total.
- Delhi got its mayor in the fourth attempt as the election was stalled earlier amid an uproar over giving voting rights to the lieutenant governor’s nominated members. Last week, Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena had given his nod to convene a meeting of the MCD House to conduct the mayor’s election following a Supreme Court order.
- After becoming mayor, Oberoi said, “I thank Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia and the people of Delhi. In the next 3 days, we will inspect the landfill site here.
- Congratulating Delhiites, Kejriwal tweeted, “The goons have lost, the public has won. Today in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, the people of Delhi won and hooliganism was defeated. Congratulations to the people of Delhi on the election of Shelly Oberoi as the Mayor.
- At the same time, the election of the Standing Committee is stuck. Voting was being done by calling the councilors in the House. As soon as 5 councilors were called for voting, there was an uproar in the House and the 5 councilors who were given ballots for voting, did not return the ballot papers. Despite accepting the demand of the BJP corporators, the election of the members of the Standing Committee is stuck. The Aam Aadmi Party has said that they will sit overnight.
- The Aam Aadmi Party is being targeted by the BJP, insisting that there is a deliberate delay in conducting the elections. So in the same house, BJP councilors pushed AAP councilors.
- If everything remains like this, then the Aam Aadmi Party may have to face defeat on one seat in the Standing Committee. If this happens, even after winning the elections in Delhi, AAP will appear on par with the BJP in the standing committee elections by winning 3-3 seats. - Meenakshi Lekhi was the first to cast her vote among the MPs of Delhi. Lastly, MP Manoj Tiwari cast his vote. Along with Manoj Tiwari, BJP MPs Pravesh Sahib Singh Verma, Harshvardhan, Gautam Gambhir, Ramesh Bidhuri and Hansraj Hans also exercised their franchise.
- In the meeting on January 6, there was a heated debate between the members of BJP and AAP, due to which the proceedings had to be postponed. After this, voting could not be held on 24 January and 6 February also due to uproar. The reason for the uproar was the decision of LG VK Saxena to allow 10 nominated MCD members to vote. AAP’s mayoral candidate Shelly Oberoi had reached the Supreme Court regarding this.
- On February 17, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of AAP. The Supreme Court had made it clear that the councilors nominated by the LG would not vote in the mayoral election. The court had asked to issue the notice within 24 hours. After this, Delhi Chief Minister Kejriwal had proposed to the Lieutenant Governor to hold elections on February 22, which he accepted.
