Meghalaya Govt Formation: An interesting political turn has come in the politics of Meghalaya, after which the way of forming the government of Konrad Sangma seems to be difficult. Two MLAs of the local party supporting Konrad Sangma’s National People’s Party (NPP) had given their support to form the government but within a short time the party refused to support it.
On Friday (March 3), Konrad Sangma staked claim to form the government in front of the state. The NPP leader had handed over the signed letter of support of 32 MLAs of the state to the governor. In the 60-member state assembly, 31 MLAs are needed for a majority.

The 32 MLAs to whom Sangma handed over the letter of support had signatures of 26 MLAs of NPP, 2 of BJP, 2 of Hill State Peoples Democratic Party (HSPDP) and two independent MLAs. After handing over the letter, Conrad Sangma had said that we have absolute majority. BJP has already given its support. Some others have also entrusted their support to us.
Shortly after handing over the letter of support on Friday, late in the evening, the HSPDP changed the political picture with a letter. In this letter, the HSPDP said that it has not authorized its legislators to support the NPP-led government formation.
