There was a time when Himanta used to save the credibility of the Congress in the entire North East. Today’s situation is that Himanta is in BJP and he is the only leader who has hold in all the states of North East.
Now the results of 3 states are about to come out, these results will not only clear the picture of BJP’s political style, it will also decide the future stature of Himanta Biswa Sarma. If the Kamal party does wonders in these states, then Himanta, who single-handedly brought the BJP to Assam, will get credit for it, as well as his stature in the BJP organization will increase.
When will the results of these states come?
Voting for the assembly elections in the three northeastern states of Nagaland, Tripura and Meghalaya has been completed on February 27. The results of the elections for 60 assembly seats in Meghalaya and 59 assembly seats in Nagaland will come on March 2. On the other hand, voting was held for 60 seats in Tripura on 16 February.
Story of Himanta Biswa becoming BJP’s firebrand
Himanta Biswa Sarma started his political career in the year 1980, when he was in the sixth grade. He had joined All Assam Students Union (AASU).
Himanta Biswa Sarma, who started his politics from AASU, was once anti-Congress. Then after a few years he joined Congress and in 2015 he left Congress and joined BJP. It is said that one of the reasons for his leaving Congress was Guru Tarun Gogoi. Biswa was determined with him.
It is said that Tarun Gogoi was promoting his son Gaurav Gogoi and Himanta did not like this. After this, he started trying to meet the central leadership of the Congress, Rahul Gandhi. After several attempts, Himanta Biswa Sarma meets the then Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi and from here Biswa Sarma’s political journey begins with the BJP.
According to the journalists of Assam, Biswa had a big role behind Gogoi’s victory in the 2011 elections. Even when Biswa joined BJP in the year 2015, he played a big role in defeating Congress and making BJP win. Himanta Biswa Sarma is also known as Chanakya of North East.

Himanta Biswa Sharma left the Congress in the year 2015 and joined the BJP and in the year 2016 gave such a statement regarding Rahul Gandhi which is discussed till date. In fact, he had claimed that Rahul Gandhi prefers to play with his dogs more than talking to politicians.
Himanta has been targeting Congress since 2016
After joining BJP in the year 2015, assembly elections were held in Assam in 2016 where Congress was defeated and BJP government was formed. After this, in the year 2017, in one of his tweets, Rahul Gandhi introduced people to his dog PD. In response to this tweet, Himanta’s statement came to the fore.
He said, “I had told earlier also. Once we had come to meet Rahul Gandhi on some serious issue of Assam. However, even at that time he was busy feeding his dog. For Rahul Gandhi, Assam is bigger than the issue. He had to feed the dog. Today it has become clear from this tweet.
Since then, he started continuously targeting the Congress, which is continuing till now. In the year 2016 itself, Biswa had said in an interview to a channel that Sonia Gandhi is a respectable woman, but Rahul Gandhi controls her. At the same time, in the year 2021, it was said that as long as Rahul Gandhi remains the face of Congress, BJP will continue to get its benefit.
Himanta’s dominance in the entire North East
For BJP, Himanta Biswa Sarma’s role has been that of a troubleshooter in the entire North East. Be it Tripura or Manipur, whenever the BJP government in these states was in trouble, Himanta Biswa Sarma handled everything with his political management and the BJP government remained intact.

In the three states of the North East, BJP has shown a lot of courage to hoist its flag. But is it possible that he may make a comeback in Tripura, Meghalaya and Nagaland. During the election campaign, the BJP of these three states had given its full strength. Tripura already had a BJP government, but in Nagaland and Meghalaya, it is still running the government in BJP alliance.
Results will come on March 2 in all these three states. But the results of the exit polls that have come before this are also interesting and there is some good news for the BJP.
Meghalaya: In this state, BJP was running the government in alliance, but in this election, after breaking ties with the alliance, BJP decided to contest all the seats on its own. If exit polls are to be believed, then this claim of the party seems to be a bit counterproductive for it. Till now there was a government of Nationalist People’s Party i.e. NPP in which BJP and UDP were its allies.
Tripura: For the last five years in Tripura, the BJP had formed the government on its own. But as soon as the top leadership of the party sitting in Delhi realized that something was wrong there and it was difficult to win re-election in the name of Biplab Deb, the party did not take any time to change the face of the chief minister.
This decision of the party now seems to be a gift for the BJP. Significantly, BJP had changed the face of the Chief Minister in Tripura like Gujarat, Uttarakhand and Karnataka. Biplab Deb was removed from the post of CM two years ago and Manik Saha was made the Chief Minister. It is being said that by changing the CM face, BJP has found a solution to anti-incumbency. Manik Saha is number one in terms of public choice.
According to the exit poll of India Today-Axis My India, out of 60 seats in Tripura, BJP can get 36-45 seats. TMP (Tipra Motha) seems to be getting 9-16 seats. Left+ is not seeing 6-11 seats and others are not getting any seats.
And the Zee News-Matrize exit poll has also predicted BJP’s return in Tripura with 29 to 36 seats. Whereas Left + Congress is expected to get 32 percent, Tipra Motha + 20 percent and others 3 percent.
According to Times Now ETG exit poll, BJP is expected to get 21-27 seats, Left 18-24 seats. Looking at all these exit polls, it is estimated that BJP+ will get 32 seats, Left+Congress will get 15 seats in the state.
Profile of Himanta Biswa Sarma
Himanta was born on 1 February 1969 in Gandhi Basti, Ulubari, Guwahati. His father was Kailash Nath Sharma and mother’s name was Mrinalini Devi. Himanta did his studies from Kamrup Academy School, after which in the year 1985 he joined Cotton College Guwahati for further studies.
He completed his graduation in the year 1990 and did post graduation in Political Science in 1992. From 1991 to 1992, he was the General Secretary of Cotton College, Guwahati. He started his political career from 15 May 2001. In the year 2001, he won for the first time from Jalukbari in Assam. After this, he was elected for the second time in the year 2006 and for the third time in 2011. In 2016 also won from Jalukbari on BJP ticket.
The special thing about Himanta Biswa Sarma is that he made a place in the cabinet as soon as he became an MLA for the first time. Since then till now he has been a part of the cabinet. He also has experience in handling ministries like Agriculture, Planning and Development, Finance, Health and Family Welfare.
